The other night I went out to Steamer’s Cafe (supposedly rated the best Jazz Venue in Orange County) and listened to live Jazz. And the experience was one of ecstasy.
I don’t know why, but there is something about live Jazz that just makes me feel overwhelmed with delight. It’s a bit weird I know, but amazing none the less. It’s kind of similar to the feeling you get after eating a great meal with good friends or looking out over a mountain landscape after hiking your way to the top.
I was talking with someone who has the same “jazz experience.” This person is a very right-brained type person and they think that Jazz taps into right brain processing. Right brain activities being the random, intuitive, holistic, synthesizing, subjective, and looking at the whole (all right brain activities).
My guess would be that Jazz also triggers left brain activity as well. And it is the mix between right brain and left brain that makes Jazz so enjoyable.
I really enjoy listening to each instrument individually (left brain) and then listening to how they all connect (right brain). My mind then goes back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And it’s this connection that the mind delights so much in.
Other things do this as well, but Jazz seems to be able to connect the right and left brain far better than most other things. And when this happens… :)
Anyway, I enjoy Jazz. And I think I’m going to go to Steamers more often.
